Bronny James’ rookie season was never going to be quiet, but few expected the amount of noise it generated. From his draft day criticism to every missed shot, the 20-year-old faced relentless scrutiny simply for being LeBron James’ son. While Bronny showed flashes of potential, his presence in Los Angeles sparked debate about nepotism and pressure.

Yet Gilbert Arenas argues LeBron’s decision to bring him to the Lakers wasn’t about favoritism, as he claimed that it was about protection.

The early months of Bronny James’ career were harsh. As a second-round pick, expectations should have been modest. He played limited minutes, bounced between the Lakers and their G League affiliate, and was mocked for slow development. Still, Arenas believes the situation would have been far worse if Bronny had landed elsewhere.“The only way LeBron can protect his son from all elements of everything is if he’s in-house,” Arenas explained. “If he’s in-house, he can control the outcome a lot better.”

"LEBRON JAMES CAN'T PROTECT BRONNY FROM THE REAL WORLD"

To Arenas, this was less about nepotism and more about leverage. LeBron has the stature in Los Angeles to shield his son from damaging narratives. “He has more dictatorship with the Lakers,” Arenas said. “[Bronny] going to another team; he don’t have no control over those GMs, over those players, over the media at that point.

So if they wanna say, ‘This n**** terrible,’ there’s nothing he can do about it.”Critics often accuse LeBron of forcing the Lakers’ hand, but Arenas counters that they are “only looking at one side of it.” He argued that if Bronny had gone to a market like New York, the relentless media pressure could have buried him before he found his footing.

Bronny James’ growth and the test ahead

Despite the rocky start, Bronny began showing signs of progress. Time in the G League boosted his confidence, where he averaged nearly 22 points per game.

Still, the expectations are changing. Entering his sophomore year, patience will be thin. When his number is called, Bronny will need to make tangible contributions because even LeBron cannot shield him once championship pursuits take priority.
