The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has welcomed Raghav Chadha and six other former AAP MPs into its fold, marking a significant political development. The party said the move signals a “goodbye to the Tukde Tukde INDI alliance".

The BJP leadership described the development as a moment of celebration, as its strength in the Rajya Sabha has increased by seven members. According to the party, Chairman C P Radhakrishnan has accepted the request of Chadha and the six MPs, formalising their entry into the BJP Parliamentary Party.

BJP targets opposition alliance

In his message, Rijiju also took a swipe at the opposition alliance, referring to it as the “Tukde Tukde INDI Alliance". He welcomed the new entrants to the National Democratic Alliance (NDA), led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, and framed their entry as part of a broader nation-building effort.

He continued his criticism of opposition parties, including the Indian National Congress and the Trinamool Congress. Rijiju claimed that despite public differences, these parties act together inside Parliament.

Referring to parliamentary proceedings, Rijiju alleged that the Congress, Trinamool and AAP had acted in unison while opposing the Women’s Quota Bill. He questioned their unity, saying they appeared to be “best of friends" within Parliament.

He further claimed that the INDI alliance had been flawed from the beginning, calling it a “fraud".

BJP strength in Rajya Sabha increases

With this shift, Chadha, along with Sandeep Pathak, Ashok Mittal, Harbhajan Singh, Swati Maliwal, Rajinder Gupta and Vikramjit Singh Sahney, are now officially part of the BJP in the Upper House.

Union Minister Kiren Rijiju confirmed the development in an online post. He said the inclusion of the seven MPs strengthens the party’s presence and reflects positively on their conduct.

Rijiju noted that he had observed these MPs for a long time and said they had not used abusive language or engaged in indiscipline or unparliamentary behaviour.

AAP calls move a “betrayal"

The development comes days after the MPs resigned from the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), dealing a major setback to the party led by Arvind Kejriwal.

AAP had earlier said it would seek their disqualification. The party argued that Chadha did not have the support of the required two-thirds strength within AAP, and described his decision as a “betrayal".

At the state level, particularly in the ongoing West Bengal elections, the Congress, Trinamool and AAP are not formally allied. However, they coordinate on certain issues in Parliament based on specific subjects.

At the national level, the opposition bloc that emerged in 2024 remains divided, with its leadership structure still fragmented.
