verification rules go live September 30

Google has finally put dates on its Android sideloading overhaul, confirming that developer verification protections will reach the first users on September 30, 2026. The rollout begins in Brazil, Indonesia, Singapore, and Thailand before a global expansion across certified Android devices in 2027.For most people, nothing changes overnight. A new system service is quietly arriving on Android phones this month through Google System Updates, but it won't touch how you install apps just yet. The friction kicks in later, and only if you stray outside the Play Store.Starting September 30, app registration becomes mandatory across a long list of stores, including Google Play, Samsung's Galaxy Store, Xiaomi GetApps, the Honor and Oppo app markets, vivo's V-Appstore, and Transsion's Palm Store.

Install something from an unverified developer after that, and you'll face Google's "advanced flow" or fall back on ADB.

What the new sideloading process actually looks like

That advanced flow is deliberately tedious. Power users must enable developer mode, confirm nobody is coaching them through the steps, restart and reauthenticate, then wait out a one-day cooling-off period before clearing a biometric or PIN check. Only then can they tap "Install Anyway." Google designed the 24-hour pause to break the urgency scammers rely on, citing a 2025 GASA report that pegged global scam losses at $442 billion.

Why Google says the crackdown is worth it

The company's pitch leans on one figure: internet-sideloaded apps carry 50 times more malware than apps from Google Play. Sideloading, Google insists, isn't dying.Hobbyists and students get an easier lane through limited-distribution accounts, launching in August, which allow sharing with up to 20 devices without a government ID or fee. The advanced flow and those accounts both arrive before September's verification rules take hold.
