Mukhyamantri Krishak Durghatna Kalyan Yojana – A safety net for farmers in Uttar Pradesh

Mukhyamantri Krishak Durghatna Kalyan Yojana is a flagship welfare scheme launched by the Uttar Pradesh government in 2020 to provide social security to farmers and their families in case of accidental death or disability while engaged in agricultural activities.

It covers land-owning farmers (khatedar/sah-khatedar), tenant/sharecroppers (bataaidar), and leaseholders whose primary livelihood is agriculture. The scheme offers financial assistance of up to Rs5 lakh for accidental death or total permanent disability (e.g., loss of both hands/legs/eyes or over 50-60% disability) and lower amounts (Rs1. 25 lakh to Rs2. 5 lakh) for partial disabilities. It includes a wide range of farm-related accidents such as snakebite, lightning, animal attack, machinery injury, drowning, fall from tree, or road accidents during farming work.Since office in 2017, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has prioritised farmer welfare as a cornerstone of his vision for a prosperous and secure rural Uttar Pradesh. The scheme was conceived as a safety net to protect vulnerable farming families from sudden economic shocks, reflecting his focus on “Kisan Kalyan” (farmer welfare) through timely financial support, reduced distress, and dignified living.By extending coverage to sharecroppers and digitising the application process, the government has ensured faster, transparent disbursal of funds (over Rs873 crore to more than 1 lakh beneficiaries since inception). This initiative aligns with broader efforts like crop insurance, irrigation expansion, and income enhancement, aiming to build resilience in the agricultural sector and make farming a respectable and sustainable livelihood.1.
