 What is changing

Google has announced that it is bringing massive update to its Workspace suite, officially supercharging its Workspace apps – Docs, Sheets, Slides and Drive – with Gemini AI-powered features which means it is now being integrated as a “collaborative partner”.

The update introduces automated document creation, professional-grade data analysis and a smarter way to search through Google Drive. The updates are rolling out today for Gemini Alpha business customers and premium subscribers. The move aims to allow the AI to pull information across emails, chats, and files to build finished products in seconds.

Google Docs: From blank page to finished draft

The new "Help me create" tool in Google Docs is designed to act as a research assistant and writer.

Instead of starting from scratch, users can ask Gemini to synthesize a first draft based on specific files in their Drive or previous conversations in Gmail.Once a draft is ready, two new features ensure it looks professional by two ways:Match Writing Style: Gemini can analyse a document and edit the text to ensure the tone is consistent.Brand Formatting: Gemini can automatically format new documents to match the structure and style of a company’s existing templates.

Google Sheets gets formula knowledge

Google is positioning Sheets as a tool that no longer requires expert-level formula knowledge. According to Google’s internal testing, Gemini in Sheets has achieved a 70.48% success rate on complex spreadsheet tasks. One of the features is “Fill with Gemini,” which can infer a user's intent to auto-populate tables. For example, if a user provides a list of customer feedback, Gemini can instantly categorize them as “Praise” or “Complaint” and draft tailored responses. Google claims this is 9x faster than manual data entry. Additionally, new "Optimization" tools allow users to solve complex logic problems, such as maximising profit in an employee schedule, using simple natural language.

Google Slides and Drive: Visual storytelling

For presentations, Google says that Gemini now handles the heavy lifting of design. A new feature allows users to turn brainstorm sketches or tables into fully editable diagrams and charts. Soon, users will be able to generate entire on-brand presentations from scratch just by describing their needs.AI Overviews is coming to Drive which means, instead of a list of files, a search for "winter 2025 feedback" will provide a summarised answer with citations at the top of the screen. Users can also ask complex questions about their entire file history and even save specific sets of documents as "Projects" for the AI to reference during long-term brainstorming. These features are currently rolling out to Gemini Alpha business customers and Google AI Pro and Ultra subscribers. The advanced Drive search features are launching first for users based in the US.
