A day after the murder of prominent Patna businessman Gopal Khemka, police have questioned over 100 inmates during a surprise raid at the city’s Beur Central Jail Sunday.
In a related development, security has been provided to Khemka’s surviving son. Khemka, the owner of Patna’s Magadh Hospital, was shot at a close range while he was waiting at his society’s gate in his car near the Twin Tower residential complex adjacent to Hotel Panache.
His murder came six years after another one of his sons was killed in a similar fashion. The incident, which came ahead of the Assembly polls in Bihar, snowballed into a major row, with the Opposition questioning the government over what it claimed was crumbling law and order in the state.
A senior police officer told The Indian Express that a high-level raid was conducted at Beur Central Jail, leading to the recovery of three mobile phones and “other prohibited items” from inside the prison.
“Three wardens have been suspended immediately for negligence of duty. Explanations have also been sought from Duty In-charge, Senior In-charge, and Jail Deputy Superintendent. If further involvement of any staff is found during the ongoing investigation, strict disciplinary action will be taken. Last night, police teams conducted raids at several locations in Patna and nearby areas, detaining and questioning several suspects,” said a senior police official.
Gopal Khemka was a prominent figure in Patna’s business community.
In his complaint to the police, Khemka’s son Gaurav wrote sought police protection, saying: “This incident has left me and my family terrified. We request security from the family and the police, and ask that our safety be ensured”.
In a post on X, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi said the incident “had once again proved that BJP and Nitish Kumar together have turned Bihar into the ‘crime capital of India’”.

“Today, Bihar is living under the shadow of loot, bullets, and murder. Crime has become the new normal here—and the government has completely failed. Brothers and sisters of Bihar, this injustice can no longer be tolerated. A government that cannot ensure the safety of your children cannot take responsibility for your future. Every murder, every loot, every bullet is a cry for change. It’s time for a new Bihar—one without fear, one with progress. This time, your vote is not just for a change of government, but to save Bihar,” he said in his post.
Meanwhile, the mortal remains of Gopal Khemka were taken to Gulbi Ghat for his last rites, attended by family and friends.
