'Got The Punishment He Deserved': Mother of Baruipur Rape-Murder Accused Refuses To Perform Son's Last Rites

Baruipur rape-murder accused Prabhash Mondol was killed in police encounter last night.

The main accused in the rape and murder of the 11-year-old girl in West Bengal’s Baruipur, was killed in a police encounter after midnight. Prabhash Mondol was taken to the crime scene as part of the investigation to reconstruct the sequence of events.

Police said Mondol snatched a gun from a policeman, fired one round at the police team and tried to escape. The police then opened fire in retaliation. Mondol was injured in the firing and rushed to a hospital, where he was declared dead, the statement said.

Mother reacts rape-accused reacts

Speaking to News18 after the encounter, Prabhash Mondol’s mother, Sandhya, said police arrived at her home early in the morning and informed her about her son’s death.

“Police came at around 5 am in the morning and told me that he is dead. They also asked for his documents for his last rites. He got the punishment for the crime he committed. I do not want to see his body, nor do I want to perform his last rites. Police can do whatever they want with his body," she said.

When asked about her son’s death, Sandhya, visibly shaken, said she was grieving as a mother but accepted that he had faced the consequences of his actions.

“As a mother, I am sad. But he has got punished for his actions. He was into intoxication. He never listened to me. We tried to bring him onto the correct path," she said.

Baruipur remains tense

Baruipur in West Bengal’s South 24 Parganas district has remained tense since the body of the 11-year-old girl was found inside a sack on Sunday.

The case has sparked widespread outrage in the area, with the incident drawing attention across the state.

An autopsy confirmed sexual assault, following which authorities registered a case under charges of murder and gangrape, along with provisions of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act. Three people have been arrested so far, while a six-member Special Investigation Team (SIT) has been constituted to probe the case.

Tensions escalated after the girl’s body was found in a pond, leading to protests in the area. In a disturbing turn, a man suspected of involvement in the crime was lynched by a mob. Protesters also blocked roads and set tyres ablaze before police restored order.
