Maharashtra Doctor Assault Row: The ruling BJP and Shiv Sena (Shinde faction) have strongly condemned the assault on doctors by Shiv Sena corporator Ramesh Mhatre at a municipal hospital in Maharashtra’s Kalyan-Dombivli, as outrage mounted over a viral video showing him allegedly attacking two doctors, including a female.

The state government has also assured an investigation and action against those responsible.

What’s The Row?

The incident, which took place on July 6 at KDMC’s Shastri Nagar Hospital, reportedly began after an altercation over the treatment of a pregnant woman. After examining her, doctors informed the family that the newborn might require treatment in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). Since all NICU beds at the civic hospital were occupied, the family was advised that the patient could be shifted to another hospital if specialised neonatal care became necessary.

Hospital staff alleged that the referral decision led to an argument, after which Mhatre and some of his supporters entered the hospital and assaulted a woman doctor, two other doctors and three nurses. They further claimed that security guards were prevented from intervening during the incident.

Govt Assures Action

Reacting to the incident, Maharashtra Minister of State for Home Yogesh Kadam said violence against doctors was unacceptable. “Assaulting doctors is wrong. We will investigate the matter and take action. If someone has any issue, they must report to the authorities instead of taking the law into their own hands," he said.

A doctor by profession, Shinde said healthcare workers serve humanity under stressful conditions and deserve protection. He added that an FIR has been registered and warned that no one who takes the law into their own hands would be spared. He also said the party would not support anyone involved and would initiate disciplinary action against those found guilty.

Maharashtra Health Minister Prakash Abitkar also denounced the incident, saying grievances should be addressed through legal channels rather than violence. BJP MLA Sudhir Mungantiwar echoed the sentiment, saying, “We cannot support any goondaism. Agencies will do their job."

Staff On Strike

Doctors, nurses and other staff at the Kalyan-Dombivli Municipal Corporation (KDMC) Shastrinagar Hospital in Dombivli went on strike after alleging they were assaulted by Mhatre and his supporters following a dispute over the treatment of a pregnant patient.

The incident has triggered an FIR, condemnation from doctors’ associations and renewed calls for stronger security for healthcare workers in public hospitals.
