Governor felicitates Bharatanatyam dancer Sohini Roychowdhury at Lok Bhavan

West Bengal Governor Dr. C.V. Ananda Bose felicitated Bharatanatyam dancer and author Sohini Roychowdhury for her international contributions to Indian classical arts and cultural thought. Her work, presented in 16 countries, engages with Indian philosophy and mythology, positioning Bharatanatyam within contemporary global discourse and fostering mutual understanding.

Bharatanatyam dancer and author Sohini Roychowdhury was felicitated by the Governor of West Bengal, Dr C V Ananda Bose, at Lok Bhavan on January 24 in recognition of her contribution to Indian classical arts and cultural thought at an international level.During the event, Governor Bose referred to Roychowdhury’s work as an engagement with Indian philosophy and mythology that extends beyond the stage. He noted that her performances and writings across 16 countries have presented classical traditions as part of contemporary cultural and ethical conversations, encouraging dialogue and mutual understanding.The Governor also spoke about the continuing relevance of Indian civilisational ideas, observing that Roychowdhury’s use of Bharatanatyam as a medium to communicate philosophical concepts has helped position the form within present-day global discourse.Responding to the felicitation, Roychowdhury said “Indian philosophy is not meant to be archived—it is meant to be lived. Through dance and storytelling, I have sought to share it as a way of life that reminds us of our shared humanity.”The event was attended by Ramadas Vallathol, grand-nephew of poet Vallathol Narayana Menon, adding a literary presence to the occasion.
