Gurgaon: A Baleno hit a 39-year-old Greater Noida West-based graphic designer standing near a gap in the central divider in Sector 75 in the early hours of Thursday, before crashing through the divider’s green belt.
The driver fled the spot.The injured man, identified as Shankar Singh Kathayat, is undergoing treatment at a private hospital. He was earlier in the ICU but his condition is now said to be stable. Another man, who was also at the median, was hit as well but discharged after first aid. His identity was not immediately clear.Kathayat, originally from Lucknow, is a resident of ACE City. He was visiting Gurgaon with his friend Varun Gupta when the incident happened.According to Kathayat’s complaint, the two men had stopped at an HP petrol pump around 6am in Gupta’s Honda Elevate to get fuel. While Gupta drove the car towards the pump, Kathayat got down and stood by the roadside to urinate.The accident occurred when another vehicle emerged from the petrol pump onto the road. Attempting to avoid it, the driver of the oncoming Baleno, allegedly speeding, lost control and veered into the divider, striking Kathayat and the other man.
The impact left him with a fractured foot and injuries to his left leg, said his elder brother, Deewan Singh (44), who works with a news channel in Noida.The incident was captured on Gupta’s dashcam. Footage showed the Baleno driver and two accomplices stepping out after the crash, but they fled while Gupta was arranging an ambulance. Gupta then took Kathayat to Medicare Hospital in Civil Lines for treatment.“The Baleno was being driven at a high speed. My brother was fortunate to survive despite being struck.
He is stable now, though still in considerable pain,” Singh said.Police said the SPR police post received information that Kathayat had been admitted to Medicare Hospital. Doctors initially declared him unfit to give a statement. He gave his statement on Friday.An FIR was registered at Badshahpur police station, and the unidentified driver has been booked under sections 281 (rash or negligent driving on a public way) and 125(b) (causing hurt by a rash or negligent act endangering human life or personal safety) of Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.
