Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) and the Indian Air Force (IAF) are set to hold a review meeting on the LCA Tejas Mk1A programme to assess SQRs and delivery timelines, defence sources told CNN-News18.
This development comes after months of delays in the delivery of aircraft, which, lately, were promised to be delivered by the end of March 2025-26.
The meeting, likely in the last week of April or early May, is expected to provide clarity on delivery schedules. Indications are that if ‘non-negotiable requirements’ are addressed satisfactorily, the first few aircraft could be delivered within the next two months.
The last review on the aircraft was held in December. Further to this, in February, HAL CMD had claimed that they are ready with at least five aircraft.
“IAF needs these aircraft and it was made clear in the last meeting that the aircraft would be expected to meet the standards that are a part of the contract. Several weapon integrations and operational requirements were pending till last time. HAL will update the IAF on progress this month," an official said.
Despite an initial October 2025 delivery target and subsequent revisions, deliveries have yet to begin. Officials cite supply chain disruptions and engine delays, while integration of the EL/M-2052 AESA radar has added further pressure on timelines.
“There is a possibility of some relaxation in SQRs given the IAF’s requirements. This is a standard process and may require revisiting tender terms and costs. However, a decision will be taken only after assessing all constraints impacting deliveries," another official said.
The IAF has placed orders for 180 Tejas Mk1A aircraft in two tranches. While HAL has showcased at least 18 airframes in recent social media posts, it has received only six engines from the US so far. HAL’s current production capacity stands at around 24 aircraft per year.
While HAL maintains that supply chain issues are the primary bottleneck, experts point to pending certifications as an additional factor delaying deliveries.
