What began as a Valentine’s Day evening for a young couple in Haryana ended in a brutal criminal conspiracy. A chartered accountant who had spent the evening with his wife later murdered her and tried to mislead police by claiming it was a robbery.
The incident took place in Bahadurgarh. The victim, Mahak, was a bank employee.
Late on Sunday night at around 11:00 pm, her husband Anshul Dhawan, a chartered accountant who works in Gurugram, called the police. He said unknown attackers had tried to rob them and had slit his wife’s throat.
However, as Jhajjar Police began their investigation, they found gaps in his statements. Anshul kept changing his version of events and could not describe the attackers. This raised suspicion.
Confession after questioning
When questioned strictly, Anshul broke down and confessed to killing his wife. Police said he had long been suspicious of Mahak’s character. She worked at HDFC Bank in Gurugram. According to police, this suspicion led to frequent arguments and eventually to the crime.
Mahak’s father, Krishna Kathuria, said he had suspected his son-in-law from the beginning.
How the crime was carried out
Police said Anshul wore gloves during the murder to avoid leaving fingerprints. He first strangled Mahak and then used scissors to slit her throat.
Jhajjar Police solved the case within 18 hours.
Anshul is a resident of Hisar, while Mahak was from Hansi. The couple had married on September 25 last year.
