The Toronto Blue Jays received an emotional surprise in the form of a handwritten letter from Max Scherzer's daughter as the veteran ace returned to them. When word came of the future Hall of Famer returning to Toronto for the 2026 season, Scherzer's wife Erica posted a photo on Instagram of a handwritten note her eight-year-old daughter had written months previous, pleading with the club to bring her dad back.In a message dated Dec. 12, 2025, the sender was identified as belonging to the Blue Jays organization. While contracts ultimately dictate who stays and goes, the letter quickly evolved into a representation of the Scherzer family’s affinity for the city. In a game of zeros and ones, of contracts and deals, the child's words provided a brief glimpse into the human side of baseball.
Max Scherzer’s daughter pens emotional appeal to the Toronto Blue Jays
It had started with compassion and encouragement, the handwritten note from Brooke Scherzer.
“Dear Blue Jays,I am so sorry that you didn’t win the World Series. I hope that you win next time. I hope my dad is back on the team. My whole family loves spending time in Toronto with our dad. We loved the aquarium, CN Tower and of course, the stadium. I am looking forward to coming back next season.Love,Max Scherzer’s daughter”Brooke talked about some of her favorite spots in the city, from the CN Tower and Ripley’s Aquarium to her excitement to return to the ballpark.
Once the letter began to circulate publicly, people were moved by its innocence and sincerity. Fans took to social media to express their support, with many dubbing it the best feel-good baseball story of the offseason. There is no reason to believe the note had any bearing on the decision made by the front office, but the message highlights just how special the Toronto chapter was for the Scherzers.
Veteran ace Max Scherzer returns with unfinished business
With the résumé to match, three Cy Young Awards, and a reputation as one of the fiercest competitors of his generation, Scherzer, 41, is entering his 19th season in Major League Baseball.
His leadership was invaluable to the clubhouse and the mound in the Jays' postseason run.In bringing him back, the Blue Jays are, in turn, ambitious and willing to be led. The rotation is a mix of youth and experience, and Scherzer will give the club stability and postseason dotted-line pedigree, as they continue to look for a ring.
