As parts of Uttar Pradesh continue to face relentless rainfall, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast more showers in the state over the next 24 to 36 hours. Earlier on Sunday, a red alert was issued for several districts in East UP, while an overall orange alert remains in effect for both East and West UP, according to a report in Hindustan Times.

The weather department attributed the ongoing downpour to the monsoon trough shifting northward, now passing through key cities like Lucknow, Kanpur, Ayodhya, and Shamli. Further, a cyclonic circulation over northeastern UP, near Bihar, is intensifying rainfall.

Kanpur, Lucknow, Ayodhya Inundated

Kanpur bore the brunt of the continued showers, with overnight rain turning roads into rivers. Areas like Govind Nagar and Kidwai Nagar were among the worst hit, with visuals showing vehicles submerged and residents wading through chest-deep water. Emergency services were deployed to drain water and assist affected citizens.

Lucknow Schools Shut Today

In the wake of rain-related disruptions, District Magistrate Visakh G Iyer ordered closure of Lucknow schools for students of Classes 1 to 12 on Monday.

Further, Ayodhya also witnessed significant flooding, with the Saryu River swelling beyond its banks. Low-lying areas such as Jalwanpura reported knee-deep water, with locals navigating through submerged streets.

Ganga Breaches Danger Mark In Varanasi

In Varanasi, the Ganga breached its danger mark of 71.26 meters on Sunday, submerging all 84 ghats and inundating over 24 localities and 32 nearby villages. It is learnt that more than 6,500 residents have been displaced and moved to safer locations amid the rain.

Meanwhile in Prayagraj, continuous rainfall triggered a flood-like situation. The rain has caused the Ganga river to breach the danger level, with several parts of the city waterlogged.

12 Dead, 17 Districts Affected

At least 12 people have died in the last 24 hours due to lightning, drowning, snake bites, and flood-related incidents. Flooding has impacted 17 districts, including Kanpur Nagar, Lakhimpur Kheri, Agra, Auraiya, Chitrakoot, Ballia, Banda, Ghazipur, Mirzapur, Prayagraj, Varanasi, Chandauli, Jalaun, Kanpur Dehat, Hamirpur, Etawah and Fatehpur.

Relief and rescue efforts were ongoing, with NDRF, SDRF, and PAC teams deployed to assist people in the worst-affected areas.
