‘Help, They’ll Kill Me’: Viral Video Shows Daughter-in-Law Beaten Over Dowry Demands In Kanpur

A case of alleged dowry harassment has surfaced in Kanpur after a disturbing video showing a woman being assaulted by her father-in-law went viral on social media. In the footage, the woman can be heard crying for help, while bystanders reportedly hesitated to intervene.

The victim, identified as Meenakshi Pandey, originally from Prayagraj, was married in 2020 to Himanshu Dubey, a resident of Anand Nagar in Kanpur. Himanshu is employed as an IT manager at a shoe company, and his father, Sushil Dubey, is a retired railway clerk.

According to the woman, her in-laws had been demanding dowry since the beginning of her marriage, allegedly asking for 2 bigha of land and Rs 20 lakh in cash. She claimed that whenever she resisted these demands, she was subjected to physical violence, verbal abuse, and mental harassment. She accused her father-in-law Sushil Dubey, mother-in-law Rama, brother-in-law Abhishek, and sister-in-law Shruti of being involved in the harassment.

A few days prior to the incident, the woman had gone to her maternal home. On Friday at around 2 pm, she returned to her in-laws’ residence accompanied by her brother Rishikesh Pandey and sister-in-law Preeti Pandey.

She alleged that upon entering the house, her father-in-law became aggressive, abused her, and attacked her. According to her statement, he pushed her to the ground and assaulted her with kicks and punches. She further claimed that her clothes were torn during the attack and that she was assaulted on her private parts.

The woman said that when her sister-in-law and neighbours attempted to step in, they were threatened. She also alleged that she was dragged out of the house by her hair and onto the street. Throughout the incident, the woman kept screaming, “Save me… they will kill me."

Her five-year-old daughter was present during the incident and witnessed the assault, she said. The victim further alleged that her in-laws had plans to kill her and had kept her confined in the house. She added that despite suffering serious injuries, she was not provided with medical care.

The woman later approached the police and lodged a complaint, but initially no action was taken. After the matter came to light, ACP Chakeri Abhishek Kumar Pandey intervened, an FIR was registered, and one accused was taken into custody.

Police officials said the viral video appears to show the father-in-law assaulting the woman.
