Top Indian intelligence sources have dismissed Pakistan’s claims of playing a peace-making role during US–Iran negotiations as a “self-goal," alleging that Islamabad is attempting to mask its role in regional destabilisation.
Rejecting remarks by Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, the sources said Islamabad lacks credibility as a “peace broker", a fact accepted by Iran.
According to the sources, India maintains that genuine regional stability hinges on concrete action against terror networks, not “shuttle diplomacy" or attempts to broker talks for leverage.
Sharif, however, has asserted that Pakistan played an active role in pushing for a ceasefire during the Iran–US negotiations, highlighting the involvement of the country’s military leadership and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar.
“We made sincere efforts for the establishment of peace in the region, and this process continues," Sharif said. “On the night of April 11, negotiations between Iran and the United States went on for 21 hours. Pakistan made full efforts towards a ceasefire, with key figures, including the Field Marshal and Ishaq Dar, playing a significant role. The Field Marshal remained resolute, and the ceasefire continues to hold," he said.
Sharif also expressed gratitude to Saudi Arabia for supporting Pakistan during difficult times.
US-Iran Talks
The United States and Iran have agreed to a ceasefire nearly a month after the outbreak of hostilities. However, the first round of talks between the two sides in Islamabad ended without a breakthrough, and there is uncertainty over a second round after US President Donald Trump cancelled a planned visit by American officials.
Meanwhile, Trump issued a fresh warning to Tehran, urging it to “get smart soon" and accept Washington’s demands for stringent curbs on its nuclear programme, even as a US naval blockade continues to tighten pressure on Iran’s economy.
According to The Wall Street Journal, the US plans to maintain the blockade on Iranian ports until Tehran agrees to dismantle key elements of its nuclear programme.
