A 44-year-old hiker, Arrabal, died after he fell 500 meters from a rocky hill in Brazil's Rio de Janeiro. He was trying to get a good picture from the edge. Watch

In a video, now going viral on the internet, a man is seen accidently fell to his death from a steep rocky hill in Brazil. The man was a hiker who was leading a team on the trek without any licence, the New York Post reported.

According to the report, Caio Rocha Aguiar Arrabal, 44, climbed on a very steep rock on a hill precariously and tried to take a picture from there. The incident happened in Rio de Janeiro on Sunday.

He died due to his injuries after falling nearly 500 feet below. He was dead by the time a rescue team could reach him through the thicket.

In the viral video, one can hear a fellow hiker warning the now deceased man to be careful as he tried to get to a very steep and risky position on the rock. Her screams can be heard after hiker falls to his death.

After the man fell, authorities launched a rescue operation which went on for four hours. The man could not be saved in time, officials said.

“We had to go in through a densely wooded area with extremely difficult access to reach him," Matheus Moura of the Maricá Civil Defence said, as quoted in the report. The trail that this group was on is called the Pedra do Macaco.

“We had to climb, ascend using ropes and carry out several procedures before getting to the site," Moura said.

That point on the hill is apparently known to be the scene of other accidents too. Visitors often climb onto the rock, which is exposed, to take pictures of the lagoons beneath.

The fatal accident happened because Arrabal tried to descend the rock from the steeper side instead of the more approachable one. It was the wrong side, according to Moura.

The Pedra do Macaco trail is not a very long one. It takes around 40 minutes to climb. It is 805 meters long.
