Three Youth Congress workers who were detained by Delhi Police from Rohru in Shimla district early on Wednesday were brought back to Himachal Pradesh after intervention by the state police, officials said.
According to Himachal Pradesh Police, the Delhi Police team was intercepted at Dharampur in Solan district. The state police described the detention as illegal and released the workers from custody.
“Himachal Police intervened after receiving information about the detention. Shimla Police has brought back the three youths, who were taken into illegal detention by Delhi Police. They are being produced before a local court as per legal procedure," police said.
Officials said the trio had been picked up in connection with protests held in New Delhi last week by members of the Youth Congress, NSUI, and other Congress workers.
Last Friday, a group of Indian Youth Congress members staged a shirtless protest inside Hall No. 5 of the AI Impact Summit in New Delhi. They removed their shirts to reveal T-shirts printed with slogans against the government and the India-US interim trade deal before being removed by security personnel.
The protest sparked a political dispute, with the BJP calling it a “shameful act to tarnish India’s image on the global stage," while the Indian Youth Congress defended it as a “peaceful" demonstration aimed at safeguarding national interests.
In connection with the case, Delhi Police have also arrested Indian Youth Congress president Uday Bhanu Chib and other members.
