Himanta Biswa Sarma on Tuesday took oath as the Chief Minister of Assam for a second consecutive term, marking the beginning of the BJP-led NDA government’s third straight tenure in the state.
The swearing-in ceremony was held at the Veterinary College Field in Khanapara, Guwahati, in the presence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union ministers and chief ministers from several NDA-ruled states.
Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya administered the oath of office and secrecy to Sarma and four other legislators at 11.40 am.
The four ministers sworn in alongside Sarma were BJP leaders Ajanta Neog and Rameswar Teli, Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) leader Atul Bora and Bodoland People’s Front (BPF) leader Charan Boro.
The development comes after the NDA secured a sweeping victory in the Assam Assembly elections, winning 102 seats in the 126-member House.
The BJP alone won 82 seats, while alliance partners AGP and BPF bagged 10 seats each.
NDA RETURNS TO POWER FOR THIRD STRAIGHT TERM
This is the third consecutive NDA government in Assam since the BJP-led alliance first came to power in 2016 under the leadership of now Union minister Sarbananda Sonowal.
According to news agency PTI, Sarma has also become the first non-Congress leader in Assam to serve as chief minister for two successive terms.
Ahead of the ceremony, Union minister Sarbananda Sonowal termed the occasion a “great day for the people of Assam" and thanked voters for reposing faith in the NDA for a third consecutive term.
“With the support of the people of Assam, NDA for the third term is going to form the government under the leadership of CM Himanta Biswa Sarma. This is a great day, and we are really thankful to the people of Assam," Sonowal said.
He further expressed confidence that Assam would emerge as one of the most developed states in the country during the alliance’s third term in office.
