Horticulture Sciences varsity hosts workshop on bael fruit in Bagalkot

A one-day workshop on the cultivation, marketing and usages of Juice Bilwa (Bael) fruit was organised at the University of Horticulture Sciences in Bagalkot on Monday.

Resource persons spoke on various aspects of the horticulture crop, Juice Bilwa or Aegle marmelos.

They said that the crop is highly suitable for Kalyana Karnataka region as it adapts well to drought-prone areas. This is the first time that the crop is being introduced to Karnataka, they said.

The four farm universities in the State have procured over 7,000 Juice Bilwa grafted saplings from the Central Institute of Arid Horticulture in Godhra and other nurseries from Uttar Pradesh.

They will be distributed to observation nurseries and select farmers in the State. They will be requested to take up trial cultivation of the crop. Registered attendees were also given some saplings, said a release.
