Naraparaju Ramachander Rao was unanimously elected as the Telangana BJP State President on Monday, a day ahead of the scheduled election. Although the election was set for the next day, the party confirmed the 66-year-old Telangana advocate’s appointment on Monday through consensus.
In a region known for its Dravidian politics, the BJP chose an upper-caste leader, a Brahmin, to head Telangana, leaving many wondering why this bold move. Sources indicate that Rao is possibly the only leader capable of keeping the party united and strong for the next three and a half years until the Assembly polls. Rao’s tenure will last three years, with the BJP having the option to appoint a new backward-caste state President six months before the election once his term expires.
Rao has strong RSS roots, and his name was unanimously agreed upon by both the Sangh and the BJP. He has climbed the ranks from ABVP, the student wing of the BJP.
Eatala Rajender was a frontrunner but couldn’t secure the position due to presumed opposition from the Bandi Sanjay faction and his past association with BRS.
Bandi Sanjay is credited as one of the most successful state Presidents, later brought to the Centre. Union Minister G Kishan Reddy was given the additional responsibility of handling state affairs. However, the BJP recognised that Telangana needed a full-time dedicated state president, and now it has one.
Rao’s X bio describes him as a “sevak of Telangana," echoing Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Rao now faces the challenge of uniting all factions, including those loyal to Kishan Reddy and Bandi Sanjay, while maintaining his own relevance in a state where the BJP is neither in power nor the main opposition party.
