Aam Aadmi Party chief and former Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Friday accused the Centre of failing to provide clarity on the country’s fuel reserves, while sharing a video showing people rushing with plastic cans towards a petrol pump in Maharashtra’s Buldhana district amid fears of diesel shortage.

In a post on X, Kejriwal said that such situations are being witnessed in many parts of the country, there is chaos everywhere and the government is nowhere to be found.

“The government is not revealing anything—how much stock of oil and gas the government has and how many days it will last? And how much stock is expected and when? The market of rumors is buzzing all around. There is chaos everywhere. The government is nowhere to be found."

Kejriwal also shared the viral video, posted by a media outlet, from Lonar town in Buldhana district, where a large crowd was seen gathering at a petrol pump to buy diesel.

https://t.co/6YYBHJtKHt— Arvind Kejriwal (@ArvindKejriwal) May 22, 2026

Sharing the clip, the outlet wrote, “In the town of Lonar in Buldhana district, a massive crowd of people gathered at the petrol pump to get diesel filled. In a video going viral on social media, people can be seen frantically running towards the petrol pump with plastic cans in their hands."

“It is reported that the diesel stock at the pump had run out, and as soon as the tanker arrived and the barricades were removed, a situation of panic ensued among the people. Amidst the war-like conditions in the Gulf countries, the growing concern over fuel is now being felt in many parts of the country," the post added.

India is one of the world’s most oil-dependent major economies, importing nearly 85 per cent of its crude oil requirements. That means any instability in the Gulf, especially around the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most critical energy chokepoints, quickly reverberates through India’s economy.

Not immediately, but a prolonged rise in crude oil prices generally becomes difficult to manage. The government had increased petrol, diesel and CNG prices by Rs 3 on Monday last week, followed by another hike on Tuesday this week.

If global crude prices continue to remain elevated, fuel prices could see further increases. State governments may come under pressure to lower VAT rates, while the Centre could also consider reducing excise duty. Rising fuel costs may additionally push inflation higher across multiple sectors.
