Hyderabad, Cyberabad police book 502 motorists for drunk driving

The Hyderabad and Cyberabad traffic police booked a total of 502 motorists for driving under the influence of alcohol during special enforcement drives conducted over the weekend as part of intensified road safety measures.

The Hyderabad Traffic Police conducted a two-day special drive on Friday and Saturday, July 3 and July 4, during which 312 motorists were caught driving under the influence of alcohol. Meanwhile, the Cyberabad Traffic Police booked 190 motorists during a weekend special drunk driving enforcement drive. The offenders included 154 two-wheeler riders, two three-wheeler drivers and 34 four-wheeler drivers.

Cyberabad Police reiterated that drunk driving is a serious offence and warned that motorists who drive under the influence of alcohol and cause fatal accidents would be booked under Section 105 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita for culpable homicide not amounting to murder, which carries a maximum punishment of 10 years’ imprisonment along with a fine.

Police also said that during the week from June 29 to July 4, courts disposed of 376 drunken driving cases in the Cyberabad Commissionerate. Of these, 10 offenders were sentenced to imprisonment along with a fine, four were ordered to perform social service in addition to paying a fine, while 362 were imposed fines alone.
