A murder inside Hyderabad’s high-security Jubilee Hills area has triggered widespread concern across the Telugu states. Police investigations into the killing of 62-year-old Tanuja, wife of Vinay Ranjan Ray, a 1986-batch IPS officer who retired as the Director General of Prisons in 2019, have revealed a targeted robbery network orchestrated by the family’s domestic help.

According to investigators, the main accused, identified as Kalpana, was not just an ordinary domestic worker but allegedly part of a well-planned robbery gang with a history of targeting wealthy households in multiple cities.

Domestic Worker Allegedly Planned Robbery For Months

As per reports, Kalpana, who is believed to be of Nepali origin, had been working at the retired IPS officer’s residence for nearly eight months. During this period, she reportedly gained the family’s trust while secretly planning a major robbery.

Police suspect she remained in constant touch with an associate named Suresh based in Pune and allegedly received instructions from him regularly. Investigators believe the gang began actively planning the operation after Vinay Ranjan Ray travelled to Bengaluru for work.

Soon after, three more members of the gang reportedly arrived in Hyderabad from Pune. Police say the group conducted surveillance around the house for nearly five days and carefully studied CCTV blind spots and possible escape routes before executing the crime.

According to a Times of India report, Suresh said CCTV footage captured three unidentified men entering the bungalow through the main gate around 1 am. They exited the gate between 2 am and 2.30 am. He further said they were not wearing masks, and two of them were carrying iron rods and one had a bag with him.

Midnight Murder And Planned Escape

According to the investigation, the gang allegedly murdered Tanuja late on Thursday night before fleeing with gold jewellery, cash and other valuables from the house.

Police say the accused used a carefully planned escape strategy to avoid immediate arrest. The suspects first travelled by auto-rickshaw to Nampally Railway Station and boarded the Telangana Express train.

Investigators initially suspected the gang was heading towards Nagpur and intensified surveillance there. However, Kalpana allegedly changed routes midway and got off at Kazipet railway station to evade tracking. Police now suspect the accused may have escaped towards Mumbai or Delhi through bus routes.

How Fake Identities Helped Gang Evade Police

Investigators say the accused used technology smartly to avoid detection. Soon after the murder, the gang allegedly discarded their old mobile phones and purchased new ones and SIM cards to prevent police tracking.

Police sources claim Kalpana constantly changed routes and communication methods to avoid entering surveillance networks. Authorities have currently detained her parents and brother-in-law in Pune for questioning.

Preliminary investigations reportedly indicate that Kalpana may have a prior criminal background linked to similar robbery cases.

Multi-City Crime Network Under Scanner

Police believe the gang may have carried out similar thefts earlier in Bengaluru as well. Investigators suspect the accused used fake Aadhaar and voter ID cards to secure jobs as domestic workers before targeting households for robbery.

Following the Hyderabad murder case, details of the accused have now reportedly been shared with police teams in Bengaluru, Mumbai and Pune as part of a wider investigation into the gang’s activities.

Police Verification Back In Focus

The sensational case has once again raised concerns around police verification for domestic workers and support staff in high-profile residential areas.

Officials say the incident highlights how important background checks have become, especially in cities where many families employ workers through informal networks without proper identity verification.

Police have urged Hyderabad residents to thoroughly verify the background and identification documents of domestic workers before hiring them.
