Hyderabad Police secured convictions in 2,469 criminal cases during the past six months, including 18 cases resulting in rigorous imprisonment of more than 20 years, 12 life imprisonment sentences and one death penalty, with officials attributing the improved outcomes to the work of the newly-established Investigation Monitoring Cell (IMC).
Police said the specialised unit monitors investigations from their initial stages, guiding investigating officers on evidence collection, witness identification, digital and forensic examination, suspect apprehension and the timely filing of charge sheets. It also works closely with public prosecutors to minimise procedural lapses during trial.
Officials said the cell played a crucial role in a recent child murder case registered at Sanathnagar Police Station, in which the accused was awarded the death penalty. The IMC closely monitored the investigation to ensure that evidence was collected scientifically and legal procedures were followed. The unit also gives priority to cases registered under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act and offences against women and children.
The cell, comprising experienced police officers and legal experts, provides continuous guidance to field officers throughout the investigation and trial process.
The police also highlighted its Court Monitoring System, under which a liaison officer is assigned to each designated court to coordinate the production of evidence, ensure the presence of prosecution witnesses and monitor cases until their conclusion, helping reduce procedural delays.
Hyderabad Police Commissioner V.C. Sajjanar said the effectiveness of policing should be measured by the delivery of justice to victims rather than the registration of cases alone.
“The true efficacy of a policing system is realised only when complete justice is delivered to the victims. The Investigation Monitoring Cell serves as a powerful backbone for our investigating officers on the ground,” he said.
He added that Hyderabad City Police would continue to strengthen investigations by combining conventional policing with scientific and forensic techniques while leveraging technology to improve conviction rates and the overall criminal justice process.
