The talk around Travis Kelce's return to the Chiefs mostly revolved around Taylor Swift. But the real story runs deeper. The star tight end never felt right about how the last season ended for the Kansas City Chiefs.

That frustration stayed with him all winter. So when questions about retirement surfaced, Kelce looked at the bigger picture. Pride, unfinished work and the hunger to compete again pushed him toward another year in Kansas City. Swift played a role, but Kelce says the main reason sits much closer to the field.

Frustration over last season pushed Travis Kelce to run it back

Travis Kelce did not hide his feelings when he spoke on the “New Heights” podcast on March 11, 2026. The veteran tight end admitted the disappointing season stayed in his head long after the final whistle.

“Of course, I want to come back. I don’t want to end my career not making the playoffs and not having one of the best years,” Kelce said on the New Heights podcast. “I f***ing hated how that s**It ended last year, and I want to make it right. I want another chance at a f***ing Super Bowl.”

The numbers explain the frustration. Kelce finished the 2025 season with 76 catches on 108 targets for 851 yards and five touchdowns. His average dropped to 50.1 receiving yards per game.

That marked the lowest mark of his career. For a player who built a decade of dominance in Kansas City, the dip felt personal. Kelce had crossed 1,000 receiving yards in seven seasons and never posted fewer than 800 yards before. He also has stacked 11 straight Pro Bowl selections since 2015.Still, the Chiefs stumbled to a 6–11 record and missed the playoffs. That ending pushed Kelce toward one more run.

How Taylor Swift’s mindset also helped shape Travis Kelce’s decision

Even though frustration drove Travis Kelce's return to the Chiefs, Taylor Swift also played a part.

Kelce spoke about that influence during an appearance on The Pat McAfee Show. “We share the same love for what we do,” Kelce said. The star TE continued, “It’s amazing to see her keep going to the table and keep finding new things creatively. That’s motivating.”Kelce pointed to Swift’s constant drive as something that stuck with him. Watching her keep pushing in music made him reflect on his own career. That perspective mattered. Kelce knew he still had something left to prove in a Chiefs uniform. The frustration from last season lit the fire. Swift’s work ethic added another spark. Now the 36-year-old tight end enters his 14th NFL season with a clear goal. He wants one more shot with the Kansas City Chiefs and one more chance to chase a Super Bowl.
