Adah Sharma on how The Kerala Story was reinterpreted

Signing The Kerala Story, Adah Sharma foresaw universal condemnation of terrorism, not the divisive reinterpretations that followed its release.

Q. At the time when you were signing the Kerala story did it ever occur to you that maybe this film might be misinterpreted by people with them claiming the movie to be biased towards one community or demonising the other?

Adah: No to be honest I thought that it's a film that people are going to say wow this film has spoken against terrorism.

So everyone of all communities are going to come and say it's true that terrorists are bad.

Like I said now if there's a dog being beaten up on the road I will say that man who's beating up the dog is wrong. I will not say that man is of Gujarati origin. He's a Hindu who beat. I won't get into that only. I will say that man beating the dog is wrong and you I hope that everyone around me will agree and say yes the man who beat the dog is wrong. Now that he belonged to a certain community I thought because abroad we've had so many shows and so many movies like Caliphate. It was the same thing and people abroad were fine with it. They praised it and they said that yeah terrorism is a real thing from Australia to Spain to Paris terrorism is an actual thing. There have been bomb blasts abroad. So now like in Australia that Boondi beach terrorist attack is there. So we all don't no one in the world supports terrorism and says it's a good thing.

So I thought this is the right movie where everyone is going to be like wow correct. You know you're right terrorism is something that shouldn't be supported and of course for me it was again a woman empowerment movie. So I thought lovely it's a girl woman empowerment movie and it's a movie against terrorism. So I honestly didn't see any I didn't see that but I think when when you release a movie and as soon as it gets banned by certain people or political parties or anyone a sect of society there will always be someone who stands in support.

So that's what I believe anyone if there's someone who bans something there will be someone who says no the ban is wrong. Which is what happened with ours and I think then the politics of it come into which the movie to be honest the Kerala Story whoever seen it knows that the movie doesn't speak of politics in any but then spoke of politics actually but Kerala Story no one ever said anything political at any point it was about these girls were making up a story. No no Kerala Story was not exactly political. Kerala Story ka debate yeh tha ki people were actually calling it that they are being in a they are demonising one community of people while the other one they are making it look like that they are the victims and the thing is hota hai aisa but I understand. But I think yeah I think it is true but these girls were the victims in this particular story these girls were the victims and these guys were bad ones like in 1920 that the girl who got possessed that guy was the bad guy no that soldier guy who possessed her he was the bad guy she was the victim now it doesn't mean that all catholic girls are victims and all hindu men are bad soldiers yeah in 1920 that guy who possessed her and who slept with that other woman in the past thing he was a hindu soldier or he betrayed the people and all and came here so that doesn't mean now and I was a catholic girl leader it doesn't mean all catholic girls are victims but yes in that particular movie yes she was a victim and that guy who happened to be hindu that time no one said anything so I thought to be honest I really didn't think it's going to go this way and I think nobody thought because our movie was a tiny movie that we thought we are releasing internationally and as soon as we released it here I we got huge feedback even internationally because from paris and a lot of social workers there as well spoke very highly of our movie and showed it to a lot of people abroad as well because they said it's the movie that's really eye-opening about terrorism.
