Serena Williams spent years winning Grand Slams and breaking records on the tennis court. But away from tennis, she was also thinking about her future and the life she wanted later on.
During a live taping of the IMO podcast with former US first lady Michelle Obama, Serena Williams opened up about freezing her eggs while still playing professional tennis. She said the decision gave her peace of mind and helped her fully focus on her career without feeling pressure about starting a family right away.The 23 time Grand Slam champion explained that she was around 27 or 28 years old when she decided to freeze her eggs.
Serena Williams said she was not ready to step away from tennis at that time and still wanted to keep competing at the highest level. According to her, the choice lifted a huge emotional burden from her shoulders because she no longer felt rushed about balancing motherhood and her career at the same time.She also shared that another person once encouraged her to take that step, and now she feels it is important to pass that advice to other women who may be facing similar decisions in life.
Serena Williams says freezing her eggs helped her focus fully on professional tennis career
During the conversation, Serena Williams gave full and honest details about why the decision mattered so much to her. She said, “I tell all my friends of age, freeze your eggs. Because I just feel like that is the best thing that you can do as a woman, as you decide to go on this journey.”The American tennis legend explained that she froze her eggs while still competing professionally because she did not feel ready to stop playing tennis.
Serena Williams said, “I froze my eggs. And I felt like once I did it, because I was still playing professional tennis, and I felt I wasn’t ready to stop, and I wanted to keep going, and it just wasn’t time.”She added, “And then all of a sudden, all this pressure came off my shoulders. Like it was just, all this weight just fell off my shoulders once I did that.”Serena Williams also said she hopes sharing her story helps other women understand that they have different choices when it comes to career and motherhood.
She explained that hearing advice from someone else years ago helped her make the decision herself.The former world number one said, “I was like 27, 28, so it was a really good time to do it. And also, someone told me to do it, so I always felt like it was really important for me to pay that forward.”Over the years, Serena Williams has often spoken openly about motherhood, family life, and the challenges women can face while building a career. This time again, many fans praised her for speaking honestly about a topic that is still personal for many women around the world.
