Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Thursday launched a sharp attack on Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi, daring him to file a legal case after accusing him of acting as a “Pakistani agent" and claiming that Gogoi’s wife is Pakistani.

Speaking to reporters, Sarma said Gogoi was free to approach the courts if he felt aggrieved. “If he thinks I am wrong, he should file a case against me. I am not afraid," the chief minister said, escalating an already bitter political war of words between the ruling BJP and the Congress in Assam.

The chief minister did not stop there. On Wednesday, he questioned Gogoi’s political credibility and roots in the state, accusing him of having little understanding of Assam’s politics and society.

Sarma described Gogoi as a “tourist" in Assam politics, alleging that the Congress leader visits the state briefly and then attempts to gain political mileage without grasping ground realities. “He comes to Assam like a tourist and then talks about politics here," Sarma said.

Mocking Gogoi’s familiarity with the region, Sarma said that the Congress leader would struggle to even identify basic political details of Upper Assam. “If someone asks him to name the constituencies from Tinsukia district to Golaghat district in Upper Assam, he will not be able to answer properly," the chief minister said during a press conference.

His remarks came in response to Gogoi’s reported claim that the Congress would win 50 seats in Upper Assam in the next Assembly elections. Sarma said the statement itself exposed Gogoi’s lack of understanding, pointing out that Upper Assam has only 42 Assembly constituencies. “This shows how disconnected he is from Assam’s political reality," Sarma said.

The chief minister further questioned Gogoi’s repeated references to building a “BOR Asom" (Greater Assam), a term the Congress leader has used in recent speeches to signal inclusive politics.

“He talks about building a greater Assam that includes all communities and religions, but his own children are not Assamese," Sarma said. “He speaks of BOR Asom, yet he has not fulfilled even the basic norms. He could not even change the citizenship status of his children."

Taking the attack further, Sarma said, “A person whose children are not Assamese how can he claim that he will build a greater Assam? In such a BOR Asom, only the miyans will remain."

Dismissing Gogoi as a serious political challenger, Sarma advised the public to ignore the Congress leader’s statements. “People should not pay attention to him. I don’t think he speaks on any serious matter," he said.

The Congress has not yet issued an official response to Sarma’s latest allegations, which are expected to intensify the political slugfest in Assam further ahead of the next electoral battle.
