A mix of heat, cloud cover and sudden rain spells is shaping the weather pattern across Karnataka this week, with the India Meteorological Department issuing a Yellow Alert for thunderstorms and lightning till April 4. While the state is transitioning between summer heat and pre-monsoon activity, Bengaluru is expected to see fluctuating conditions over the next few days.

For Bengaluru, the next few days are likely to remain partly cloudy with spells of sunshine dominating large parts of the day. Maximum temperatures are expected to hover around 32–34 degrees Celsius, while nights may stay relatively comfortable at around 21–23 degrees Celsius.

Rainfall activity in the city is expected to remain limited and scattered. However, cloud build-up during the afternoon and evening could trigger isolated light showers in some parts. The overall trend suggests a typical pre-monsoon pattern where heat builds through the day and cloud activity increases later.

Yellow Alert For Thunderstorms Across Karnataka

The IMD has issued a Yellow Alert across Karnataka till April 4, warning of light to moderate rainfall accompanied by thunder and lightning in several regions. Coastal, Malnad and south interior districts are expected to see a mix of sunshine, cloud cover and scattered rainfall activity.

Despite this, Bengaluru and other south interior districts may largely remain dry, with only minimal chances of rainfall during this phase.

Even as rain activity is reported in parts of the state, coastal Karnataka continues to experience above-normal temperatures. Regions along the coast have recorded maximum temperatures counting from 1.6 to 3 degree Celsius higher than the long-term average.

At the same time, interior parts of Karnataka, including some areas closer to Bengaluru, have seen a slight dip in maximum temperatures due to recent rainfall and changing wind patterns.

Rainfall Patterns Vary Across Regions

Districts such as Dakshina Kannada, Udupi and Uttara Kannada are expected to receive light rainfall during the afternoon and evening hours. However, the influence of winds from the Arabian Sea may reduce rainfall intensity and limit thunderstorm activity.

In Malnad districts, the presence of westerly winds may suppress rainfall activity for now, keeping conditions relatively dry. Northern districts such as Belagavi, Dharwad and Bagalkot may see isolated light rain, while most other regions are likely to experience sunny conditions with intermittent cloud cover.

March Rainfall Higher Than Usual In Parts

According to data from the Karnataka State Natural Disaster Monitoring Centre, rainfall was recorded across the state during March. While the monthly average rainfall was lower overall, several districts received significantly higher amounts.

Compared to the usual 10–20 mm rainfall in March, some districts recorded up to 60 mm. Out of 31 districts, 22 witnessed heavy rainfall, five recorded excess rainfall and four saw normal levels.

Looking ahead, rainfall activity is expected to pick up again across Karnataka from around April 10. Several districts including Bidar, Kalburgi, Vijayapura, Bagalkot, Belagavi, Dharwad, Gadag, Haveri, Shivamogga, Udupi, Dakshina Kannada, Kodagu, Chikkamagaluru, Hassan, Mysuru, Chamarajanagar, Mandya, Bengaluru South, Bengaluru Urban, Bengaluru Rural, Kolar, Chikkaballapur and Tumakuru have been placed under a two-day Yellow Alert.

El Niño May Impact Upcoming Monsoon

Forecast agencies have also warned that the onset of El Niño conditions from June could affect the southwest monsoon this year. If the pattern strengthens, it may influence rainfall distribution across Karnataka during the monsoon season.

For now, Bengaluru residents can expect a familiar April pattern of warm afternoons, cloudy evenings, and the occasional surprise drizzle that refuses to fully commit.
