'Important Duty Of Democracy': MK Stalin Urges Tamil Nadu Governor To Avoid Delay In Govt Formation

The TVK has emerged as the single largest party in Tamil Nadu, but suspense over the government formation continues as Governor Arlekar demanded proof of majority support.

Tamil Nadu’s outgoing Chief Minister MK Stalin has urged Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar to take any immediate action for the formation of the government in the state and avoid delay in the process, amid the ongoing impasse between actor-turned-politician Vijay’s Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) and the Governor.

Despite the TVK emerging as the single largest party in the recent election with 107 seats, the Governor has asked it to prove a majority in the Assembly, attracting criticism from other parties of administrative overreach and acting in violation of the public mandate.

Taking to X, Stalin said the results of the Tamil Nadu election had long been announced, and the existing DMK-led Assembly had been dissolved by the Governor. “In such a situation, it is not only the compulsion of the times but also the most important duty of democracy that a new government must be formed for the elected Members of the Legislative Assembly to take their oaths of office and to advance the welfare of the state," he wrote.

“In this context, on behalf of the DMK, I request that His Excellency the Governor take immediate action to form a new administration in accordance with the Constitution, in order to avoid any delay in the formation of the government," he added.

Tamil Nadu Government Formation

Meanwhile, the TVK chief is expected to meet with the Governor for the third time today after getting a boost, with the CPI and CPI(M) extending unconditional support for the party.

The two parties ruled out a formal alliance, saying they would provide external support to Vijay’s party. Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK), which has two MLAs, is likely to support Vijay’s TVK. The party has said that it would go with the decision of the Left parties.

Meanwhile, Tamil Nadu BJP president Nainar Nagenthran said the party has accepted the Assembly poll verdict and will not support or vote for any party in the government formation process, stating that the BJP respects the people’s mandate.

Vijay needs the support of 117 members to prove a majority in the Assembly, after he vacates one of the two seats he won in the recent Tamil Nadu election. He is likely to provide the Governor with a list of 118 members to prove his party’s majority.

TVK’s dominant performance has fuelled rumours of what could be an unthinkable first in Tamil Nadu, an alliance between Dravidian rivals DMK and the AIADMK to prevent him from coming to power. The AIADMK hinted that a decision would be made if the governor again disallows TVK to form the government.
