Moving quickly after a nod from Defence Minister Rajnath Singh to involve private players, the Aeronautical Development Agency has invited expressions of interest from Indian companies to develop and produce the fifth-generation fighter jet — the advanced medium combat aircraft.
The deadline fixed for the project is eight years. Indian companies – a single company, joint venture or consortium – can bid for this big project.
“The objective of this EOI is to shortlist Indian companies (owned and controlled by resident Indian citizens) who are technically capable for the development, building of prototypes, supporting flight test and certification of AMCA (advanced medium combat aircraft)," the EOI document stated.
The Aeronautical Development Agency (ADA) will shortlist reputed Indian companies experienced in the aerospace and defence sectors with capability to absorb the design of AMCA. The agency is also looking for adequate experience in the field of development and engineering, manufacturing, equipping, integration, testing, quality management, customer support among others. It has specified that the shortlisted company must possess the capability of setting up a manufacturing facility for series production.
On May 27, in a significant push to enhance India’s indigenous defence capabilities and foster a robust domestic aerospace industrial ecosystem, Rajnath Singh approved the AMCA programme execution model.
The ADA is set to execute the programme through industry partnership. The execution model approach provides equal opportunities to both private and public sectors on a competitive basis.
This is an important step towards harnessing the indigenous expertise, capability and capacity to develop the AMCA prototype, which will be a major milestone towards self-reliance in the aerospace sector.
