India reiterated its call for restraint amid the rapidly deteriorating conflict in Iran and the wider Gulf region, emphasising that dialogue and diplomacy are essential to de-escalate tensions and prevent further loss of life.
In an official statement, the Ministry of External Affairs said New Delhi was “deeply concerned at the recent developments in Iran and the Gulf region" and urged “all sides to exercise restraint, avoid escalation, and prioritise the safety of civilians". The statement added that “dialogue and diplomacy should be pursued to de-escalate tensions and address underlying issues" and that the “sovereignty and territorial integrity of all states must be respected".
The MEA’s remarks come against the backdrop of a major escalation in the Middle East, triggered by recent military strikes involving the United States, Israel and Iran that have drawn international concern.
In its statement, the MEA also underscored its deep concern for the well-being of its citizens in the region. The ministry said its missions in affected nations are in close contact with expatriate communities, issuing advisories and extending assistance as necessary.
“Our Missions in the region are in touch with Indian nationals and have issued appropriate advisories asking them to remain vigilant, stay in contact with the Missions, and follow local security guidance," the MEA added.
New Delhi also highlighted vulnerabilities in trade and energy flows. A substantial portion of India’s crude oil and liquefied natural gas imports transits through the Gulf and the Strait of Hormuz. The MEA warned that any major disruption to shipping lanes or regional logistics would carry serious economic consequences. It added that India is “firmly opposed to attacks on merchant shipping," confirming that some Indian nationals have been killed or are missing in recent attacks in the past few days.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi separately described the situation in West Asia as a “matter of grave concern" and reiterated that India consistently supports peaceful resolution of disputes through dialogue and diplomacy.
