The latest round of talks comes as both countries continue efforts to rebuild relations strained by the military standoff in eastern Ladakh that lasted for more than four years.

India and China held fresh diplomatic talks in Beijing on Thursday and reviewed the situation along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) in eastern Ladakh, with both sides expressing satisfaction over the continued peace in border areas.

The meeting took place under the framework of the Working Mechanism for Consultation and Coordination (WMCC) on India-China border affairs. According to the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), the discussions were “constructive and forward-looking" and focused on maintaining stability along the border while gradually improving overall bilateral ties.

In a statement issued after the talks, the MEA said peace and tranquillity in the border regions had helped both countries move towards the normalisation of relations after years of tensions following the 2020 Galwan Valley clashes.

During the meeting, the two sides reviewed the current border situation and discussed several issues related to border management, delimitation, mechanism building and cross-border cooperation. They also agreed to continue diplomatic and military-level communication through existing mechanisms.

India and China further decided to make “substantive preparation" for the next round of Special Representatives (SR) talks, which is expected to take place in China.

The Indian delegation was led by Sujit Ghosh, Joint Secretary (East Asia) in the MEA, while the Chinese side was headed by Hou Yanqi, Director General of the Boundary and Oceanic Affairs Department of the Chinese Foreign Ministry.

During his visit, Ghosh also met Liu Jinsong from the Chinese Foreign Ministry’s Department of Asian Affairs and paid a courtesy call on Chinese Assistant Foreign Minister Hong Lei.

The latest round of talks comes as both countries continue efforts to rebuild relations strained by the military standoff in eastern Ladakh that lasted for more than four years.

Over the past year, India and China have taken several diplomatic and military steps to ease tensions. Troops from both sides have withdrawn from multiple friction points along the LAC following a series of negotiations.

In October 2024, the two countries finalised a disengagement agreement for Depsang and Demchok, the last remaining friction points in eastern Ladakh.

Shortly after the agreement, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping met in Kazan, where they discussed measures aimed at improving bilateral ties.

Earlier, in August last year, National Security Advisor Ajit Doval and Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi held Special Representatives talks in New Delhi to discuss border peace and stability.

Prime Minister Modi also travelled to the Chinese city of Tianjin last year to attend the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit, where he held extensive discussions with President Xi on the sidelines of the event.

During the meeting, Modi reiterated that India remains committed to strengthening ties with China based on mutual trust, mutual respect and mutual sensitivity.
