Government sources said the shift in sourcing and shipping routes means around 70% of India’s crude now comes from non-Hormuz origins.

Authorities also stressed that India has no plans for fuel rationing or price increases on petrol and diesel.
The government is fully committed to ensuring uninterrupted fuel supply across India despite disruptions in global energy markets linked to the ongoing conflict involving Iran, Israel and the United States, top government sources told CNN-News18.
According to the sources, India currently holds around 25 days of crude oil stocks and another 25 days of petrol and diesel inventories while the total cover including strategic reserves stands at nearly 50–60 days. Officials said the government is closely monitoring the situation but no release from the Strategic Petroleum Reserves (SPR) is planned unless there is a severe disruption in supply.

Senior officials from the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas and public sector oil companies are coordinating closely to maintain stability in fuel availability across the country. Authorities said that India has significantly diversified its crude supply in recent years, increasing imports from Russia, the United States and producers in West Africa while reducing dependence on shipments passing through the Strait of Hormuz.
Government sources said the shift in sourcing and shipping routes means around 70% of India’s crude now comes from non-Hormuz origins, a move aimed at insulating the country from geopolitical disruptions in the Gulf. Officials believe the diversification of suppliers and routes will help ensure continuous energy supplies in the coming days.
Authorities also stressed that India has no plans for fuel rationing or price increases on petrol and diesel, in contrast to steps being considered by some countries in the region. Public sector oil marketing companies including Indian Oil Corporation, Bharat Petroleum and Hindustan Petroleum are absorbing short-term cost pressures to shield consumers from volatility in international markets.

The assurances come even as the wider Middle East conflict begins to affect domestic cooking gas supply chains. Disruptions in liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) shipments linked to the conflict have led to irregular supply of commercial LPG cylinders in several major cities including Mumbai, Bengaluru and Kolkata.
The government has directed oil companies and refineries to boost LPG production and prioritise domestic supply. Hindustan Petroleum said steps have been taken to enhance LPG output and ensure availability for households and essential sectors such as hospitals and educational institutions, while other non-essential industrial uses of propane and butane are being restricted.
Officials said the government’s priority remains ensuring that households and critical services continue to receive cooking fuel while the supply chain stabilises.
Meanwhile, authorities are exploring security arrangements for LPG shipments, including discussions with both Iran and the United States to allow Indian LPG vessels to operate under the protection of the Indian Navy. Government sources said supplies are expected to stabilise in the coming days once these arrangements are in place.
