Radio host Michael Savage’s remarks spark fresh attention and response

News18
A social media post by Donald Trump has pushed a controversial US radio host back into the spotlight after a podcast clip with remarks about India and China began circulating widely.
The voice in the clip belongs to Michael Savage, who hosts the podcast Savage Nation. Known for his direct and often provocative style, Savage was speaking about US citizenship laws when the comments were made.
In the episode, he criticised birthright citizenship — the rule that grants automatic citizenship to anyone born in the United States. While explaining his argument, he said, “A baby here becomes an instant citizen, and then they bring in their entire family from China, or India, or some other hell-hole on the planet."
He went on to make further claims about immigrants, saying they are “gangsters with laptops" and adding that they have “done more damage to this nation than all the mafia families put together."
Savage also questioned whether existing laws still apply in the same way today, pointing to changes in global travel. “The Constitution was written before air travel… how relevant are some of these arguments when people are coming here by airplane in the ninth month of their pregnancy," he said, referring to what he described as “birth tourism."
The remarks gained wider attention after Trump shared the podcast clip and its transcript on social media. Following the repost, the video began circulating more widely, with excerpts being shared across platforms.
The timing of the clip’s spread comes amid ongoing discussions in the US around immigration policy and birthright citizenship, issues that have remained part of political debate in recent years.
India’s response evolved as the clip gained traction. Initially, the Ministry of External Affairs said it had seen reports. As the controversy grew, officials responded more directly, describing the remarks as “uninformed, inappropriate and in poor taste."
The spokesperson also said such comments do not reflect the broader relationship between India and the United States, which has been built over time on mutual respect and shared interests.
The clip continues to circulate online, with the podcast segment and Trump’s repost keeping the discussion active.
