With trials scheduled before its debut, the B28 is expected to redefine connectivity and comfort while showcasing India’s engineering capabilities.

India’s first indigenous bullet train, the B28, is on track to be ready by March 2027, marking a historic leap in the country’s high-speed rail ambitions.

Developed by BEML at its Bengaluru rail coach complex, the project was commissioned in October 2024 by the Integral Coach Factory in Chennai. The Ministry of Railways has confirmed that two trainsets are being manufactured, each designed for a speed of 280 kmph, with an operational speed of 250 kmph. Extensive testing and trials will follow before passenger services begin.

The B28 will initially operate on the Surat-Vapi stretch, a 97-km section of the Mumbai-Ahmedabad bullet train corridor, with services expected to start by August 2027. This rollout is seen as a crucial step in India’s broader plan to establish modern high-speed rail connectivity, reducing travel time dramatically between major cities.

Each B28 trainset will consist of eight cars, with the total contract valued at ₹866.87 crore. The train will feature a fully air-conditioned Chair Car configuration, equipped with reclining and rotatable seats, onboard infotainment, and special provisions for passengers with restricted mobility. The emphasis is on comfort, speed, and modern amenities, making the B28 a symbol of India’s technological progress in rail transport.

By manufacturing the B28 domestically, India is reducing reliance on imported rolling stock and showcasing its capability to build advanced infrastructure. The project not only represents a milestone in engineering but also sets the stage for future expansions, including the planned B35 bullet train upgrade.
