Haryana is reportedly planning to build India’s tallest building at its 1,000-acre Global City project along the Dwarka Expressway near Gurugram, making an ambitious effort to push the state to compete with global business centres through world-class infrastructure and urban planning.
The project is currently at the proposal and Request for Proposal (RFP) stage, with the bidding process yet to begin, the Hindustan Times reported, citing Haryana Cabinet Minister Rao Narbir Singh. Key milestones such as finalisation of bidders and consultants remain awaited.
The building is reportedly being planned as a mixed-use landmark, comprising premium office spaces, global corporate headquarters, hospitality, observation decks and public spaces. Beyond its commercial purpose, officials see the structure as a statement project that reflects Haryana’s growing economic aspirations and rapid urban evolution.
What We Know About The Project
The Global City project is a major urban development hub that is spread across 1,000 acres along the Dwarka Expressway. It is expected to emerge as a major financial and innovation centre of the National Capital Region (NCR) upon completion.
Singh told HT that the proposed building aims to position Global City as a global destination, comparable with skyscrapers in Singapore, Dubai and major European cities. The government is proceeding in a phased and structured manner on the construction, he added.
Planning documents show that the project will support a residential population of nearly 1.8 lakh citizens and a floating population of around 5.2 lakh people. It will also include Light Rapid Transit (LRT), electric buses, pedestrian walkways and dedicated cycling tracks.
With a built-up area exceeding 120 lakh square metres, Global City is projected to attract investments of nearly Rs 10 lakh crore. “With the proposal for India’s tallest building and a strong emphasis on ESG commitments, sustainability and economic growth, Global City is being planned as a transformative urban development for Haryana and the NCR," Singh said.
24/7 Electricity Supply, Green Space
The project is being designed on learnings from Singapore, Japan, the European Union and Dubai, with plans to ensure 24/7 electricity and water supply in all buildings. The project is expected to generate over 5.2 lakh jobs and house more than 200 multinational companies.
A range of key facilities — including schools and colleges, office spaces, hospitals, fuel stations, EV charging points, fire stations, and a sports complex — are planned within a 15-minute walking distance, ensuring easy accessibility for residents and professionals alike.
Additionally, over half of the area has been designated as open and green space, and officials are planning to plant one lakh trees. The internal layout of the Global City Project will be shaped by green corridors, landscaped streets, grass pavers, and designated vehicle-free zones to promote sustainable mobility.
The master plan also incorporates a range of renewable and energy-efficient solutions, including solar panel–covered parking areas, solar-powered street lighting, rooftop solar PV installations, smart energy metering, and systems for bio-waste recycling and reuse.
