India’s defence research establishment has achieved a major milestone after successfully conducting three consecutive missile flight tests on Wednesday and Thursday (June 10 and 11), demonstrating advanced capabilities in ballistic missile defence and anti-ship warfare, the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) said.
The trials included the successful validation of a multi-layered ballistic missile defence (BMD) system capable of intercepting long-range threats, including missiles of intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) class.
The interceptors successfully engaged their designated targets.
Multi-Layered Missile Shield
According to DRDO, the three back-to-back flight tests were carried out over Wednesday and Thursday to demonstrate integrated defensive capabilities against evolving aerial and maritime threats.
The tests confirmed the effectiveness of a multi-layered missile defence architecture designed to detect, track and neutralise incoming ballistic missiles at different stages of flight.
The systems have been developed using advanced technologies to counter emerging missile threats and enhance India’s strategic deterrence. Officials said the successful trials place India among a select group of nations with proven capability to engage high-end ballistic missile threats, including ICBM-class systems.
Naval Strike Capability
Alongside the missile defence tests, DRDO also conducted the maiden flight trial of the Naval Anti-Ship Missile–Medium Range (NASM-MR). The system is designed to engage enemy vessels at medium range.
The trials were witnessed by senior officials from DRDO and the Indian Armed Forces. Secretary, Department of Defence R&D and Chairman DRDO Rajesh Kumar Singh closely monitored the exercises and praised the coordinated efforts of scientists and industry partners in executing multiple complex missions within a 24-hour window.
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh also congratulated DRDO on the successful demonstration of these critical technologies, calling it a major boost to India’s defence preparedness.
