Indian women football team captain Sweety Devi and goalkeeper Panthoi Chanu were hospitalised after sustaining injuries during their team’s 1-3 defeat against Chinese Taipei in their concluding group match of the AFC Women’s Asian Cup in Sydney on Tuesday. The duo was discharged after assessment and returned to their team hotel later.
“Elangbam Panthoi Chanu and Sweety Devi Nganbam have been taken to hospital after sustaining injuries during today’s match. Further assessment is awaited," stated the All India Football Federation (AIFF).
Later, in a statement on X, AIFF said they’ve been discharged.
“Following medical assessment and tests, Panthoi Chanu Elangbam and Sweety Devi Ngangbam have been discharged from the hospital and have returned to the team hotel in Sydney," read the statement.
The incident occurred in the 83rd minute when Panthoi, attempting to thwart a Chinese Taipei attack, collided with Sweety Devi. Both players had to be stretchered off the field.
Panthoi sustained significant facial swelling after being struck by Sweety’s knee, while Sweety remained motionless on the ground before medical intervention.
The players were promptly taken to a nearby hospital for further tests to determine the extent of their injuries.
In the match, despite dominating for large portions and creating numerous chances, India’s failure to capitalise in the final third proved costly, resulting in their early exit from the tournament, which they had qualified for on merit for the first time.
The #AsiaDream came to an end today. After 23 years, the Indian women’s team returned to the Asian stage. The results may not have gone our way, but the belief and the spirit never wavered right until the final second. There’s no doubt about it. 🇮🇳
