The Congress, which did not have an office of its own in Mysuru for decades, will soon see this become a reality with the construction of an Indira Congress Bhavan in the city.

Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and KPCC president D.K. Shivakumar took part in the groundbreaking ceremony of the project which will come up next to the city railway station.

The land where the Indira Congress Bhavan will be constructed was allotted by former Chief Minister D. Devaraj Urs, and was under the aegis of a trust for a long time.

Mr. Siddaramaiah said that this will be the first Congress Bhavan in Karnataka to be named after Indira Gandhi, and set a target of completing the construction of the structure within a year.

Mr. Shivakumar likened the building to a ‘temple’ for party workers, and urged all leaders and cadres to contribute generously.

“This is to infuse a sentiment that there is your contribution to it, and in future, you can claim it with pride,” he said, adding that the office is being funded entirely by workers and leaders.

Mr. Shivakumar also announced that the land was under a trust headed by MLA for Narasimharaja Tanvir Sait, who has now transferred the property to the Congress party. The KPCC president said that there are plans to build 100 Congress Bhavans across the State, and instructed MLAs and block presidents to take up the task in their respective constituencies. “Though delayed in Mysuru, it is better late than never,” Mr. Shivakumar said.

Mr. Shivakumar stated that elected representatives, including MLAs and MPs, take up the construction of community halls, quarters, etc., and there was no reason why they would dither in doing the same when it comes to Congress Bhavans.

Both Mr. Siddaramaiah and Mr. Shivakumar stressed that the funding for the construction should come from the contributions of Congress workers. District president Vijay Kumar, city unit president R. Murthy, and others were present.
