From historic diplomacy and world-famous mineral water to Alpine scenery, Evian-les-Bains offers a unique backdrop for the 2026 G7 Summit.

As French President Emmanuel Macron prepares to host this year’s Group of Seven (G7) summit, the spotlight has turned to Evian-les-Bains, a picturesque lakeside town in eastern France known for its history, natural beauty and world-famous mineral water.

Nestled at the foot of the Alps on the southern shore of Lake Geneva, directly across from Switzerland, Evian-les-Bains may have a population of fewer than 10,000 people, but it has earned an international reputation that far exceeds its size.

A Small Town With Global Significance

Located in France’s Haute-Savoie region, Evian-les-Bains has long attracted visitors with its thermal springs, elegant Belle Époque architecture and stunning lakeside setting. The town also holds an important place in history.

In 1962, the Evian Accords, which ended the Algerian War and paved the way for Algeria’s independence from France, were signed here, making the town synonymous with one of the most significant diplomatic agreements of the 20th century.

Home Of The Famous Evian Water Brand

Evian-les-Bains is perhaps best known worldwide as the source of Evian mineral water.

According to local history, the water’s unique qualities were first discovered in 1789 by a French nobleman. The water originates as rain and snowmelt in the Alps before being naturally filtered through layers of glacial moraine and Alpine rock. The town’s first thermal spa opened in 1796, while commercial bottling of the water began in 1826.

Today, the Evian brand is owned by French food and beverage giant Danone, which produces around six million bottles of Evian water every day.

A Familiar Venue For World Leaders

This is not the first time Evian-les-Bains has hosted a major international gathering.

In 2003, the town welcomed leaders of the Group of Eight (G8), which at the time included Russia. Participants included French President Jacques Chirac, U.S. President George W. Bush, British Prime Minister Tony Blair, Russian President Vladimir Putin and German Chancellor Gerhard Schröder.

The summit took place against the backdrop of the Iraq War, with leaders seeking to repair divisions that had emerged within the alliance over the conflict.

A Destination For Golf Enthusiasts

Beyond diplomacy and history, Evian-les-Bains is also known for its world-class golf facilities.

The Evian Resort Golf Club, located between Lake Geneva and the Alpine peaks, is home to the Champions Course, which hosts the annual Amundi Evian Championship, one of the most prestigious events in women’s golf. The course dates back to 1904 and remains one of Europe’s premier golfing destinations.

With its blend of historic significance, natural beauty and international appeal, Evian-les-Bains provides a distinctive setting for world leaders gathering for this year’s G7 summit.
