“To establish Ayurveda and strengthen related research at the international level,” says Acharya Balkrishna—a vision that forms the foundation of the Herbal Research Division at Patanjali Research Foundation.
Built around this guiding principle, the division represents one of the most ambitious efforts to systematically document, study, and validate medicinal plants across the world. At its core, the Herbal Research Division is dedicated to bridging traditional knowledge with scientific inquiry. Under the supervision of “Acharya Balkrishna,” the division has undertaken extensive documentation of medicinal plants used in diverse therapeutic systems globally.
One of its most remarkable achievements is the creation of 111 volumes of the World Herbal Encyclopedia, a massive compendium that records the medicinal properties, geographical distribution, and therapeutic relevance of nearly 50,000 medicinal plants.

Documenting nature’s pharmacy at a global scale
The World Herbal Encyclopedia stands as a cornerstone of this effort. Far more than a catalog, it is a structured scientific archive that captures centuries of traditional knowledge while aligning it with modern botanical and pharmacological understanding.
By mapping plants across regions and medical traditions, the division is helping create a unified global database of herbal medicine. This work reflects a deeper philosophy: that understanding nature’s diversity is key to unlocking future healthcare solutions. The division actively conducts vegetation surveys across India, studying plant biodiversity in its natural habitat and evaluating its potential applications in modern pharmaceuticals.
These field studies ensure that research remains grounded in real ecosystems rather than confined to laboratories.
Research, education and knowledge creation
Beyond documentation, the Herbal Research Division plays a vital role in knowledge dissemination and academic development. It has published over 40 educational books covering areas such as medicinal plants, agriculture, and tribal knowledge systems. These publications aim to preserve indigenous wisdom while making it accessible to researchers, students, and practitioners. In parallel, the division has produced more than 120 research papers, some appearing in high-impact international journals. This growing body of work reflects a clear shift—Ayurveda is no longer confined to traditional texts but is increasingly entering the realm of peer-reviewed scientific discourse.
Nurturing future researchers
A distinctive aspect of the division is its focus on nurturing emerging talent. By engaging young researchers in botanical studies, fieldwork, and publication efforts, it is building a new generation of scientists who are equally fluent in classical Ayurvedic principles and modern research methodologies.
This integration is crucial for sustaining long-term innovation in the field. While medicinal plants remain the primary focus, the division’s scope extends into botanical sciences, agriculture, and interdisciplinary research. Its work supports the broader goal of transforming Ayurveda into a globally credible, evidence-based system. By combining traditional plant knowledge with modern validation techniques, the division contributes to developing safer, more effective herbal formulations.
A philosophy rooted in discovery
“Our knowledge largely depends on how we unfold nature’s mysteries,” emphasizes “Acharya Balkrishna.” This idea continues to guide the division’s work—treating nature not just as a resource, but as a complex system waiting to be understood through careful study and respect. In an era where natural remedies are gaining renewed global attention, the Herbal Research Division of Patanjali stands at a crucial intersection—preserving ancient wisdom while shaping the future of plant-based medicine through science, scale, and systematic research.
