New Delhi: Meta has recently releases the expansion of Instagram’s upgraded Teen Accounts experience in India, by unveiling revised 13+ content settings focused on showing age-appropriate content by default. Meta has stated that teens under 18 will automatically be placed in this setting and will not be able to opt out without parental permission.

This upgrade is specially designed to ensure that the type of content teens see on Instagram is broadly the same as what would be enabled in movies rated for ages 13 and above, while continuing to minimize exposure to sensitive material.

Meta has also stated that the upgraded Teen Account features have begun rolling out gradually in India and will be made available more widely over the coming months. It has also refined its content policies for Teen Accounts by aligning them with widely recognized 13+ movie rating standards and incorporating parent feedback under the upgraded system.

In addition, Meta has stated it will now further limit exposure to content by featuring the strong language, risky stunts, and material that could promote harmful behavior, including posts involving marijuana related items.

It has also strengthened protections across different parts of the platform by using updated technology. Teen users will no longer be able to follow or interact with accounts identified as sharing age-inappropriate content, and such accounts will also be restricted from contacting teens. Meta has also added that search results for a broader set of sensitive or mature terms will also be blocked even if misspelled.

These restrictions will go on to expand across recommendations, feeds, stories, and comments. Teens will not be able to view or engage with the content that violates the upgraded guidelines, even if it is shared by accounts they already follow. Links to such content sent through direct messages will not open for teen users. Meta has also noted that its AI systems have been upgraded to ensure the responses will remain appropriate for the users in the 13+ category.

Meta also unveiled a new Limited Content option for parents who want stricter controls. Meta stated that this setting will filter out more content from the teen experience, and it will also restrict interactions such as viewing, leaving, or receiving comments on posts.
