The Indian National Trade Union Congress (INTUC) Young Workers Council has called for making Internal Complaint Committees (ICC) mandatory for all political parties to ensure accountability in addressing grievances raised by women.
The demand was discussed and resolved at the State committee meeting of the council held at the INTUC Bhavan in Thrissur on Sunday.
The meeting observed that complaints raised by women in political organisations are often not subjected to serious inquiry. Instead, there are attempts to suppress such complaints or pressure complainants into withdrawing them. “This is unbecoming of a democratic society,” said council State president Karthik Sasi.
Calling for corrective action, the council urged the political parties to show the moral courage to set up ICCs by including external legal experts and eminent women, rather than keeping the process confined to the party structure. As part of its own initiative, the council will establish an ICC.
‘Crossed every limit’
The State committee of the INTUC youth wing has demanded that Rahul Mamkootathil resign as MLA, strongly criticising his conduct and warning that Congress’ values were being undermined by leaders misusing positions of power. The committee alleged that party posts were being treated as a shield for criminal behaviour. “Mr. Mamkootathil has crossed every limit.“
The youth wing emphasised that the Congress party could not allow its offices to become safe haven for people with criminal attitudes. “Those who do not understand the history and values of the Congress are sabotaging the movement. Mr. Mamkootathil’s MLA position and all organisational responsibilities should be withdrawn immediately,” it added.
