Commuters travelling through central Delhi on April 4 are advised to plan their journeys carefully, as traffic restrictions and diversions will be in effect for the upcoming Indian Premier League 2026 clash between Delhi Capitals and Mumbai Indians.

Heavy traffic expected from 01:00 PM – 09:00 PM.LIKELY AFFECTED STRETCHES - Bahadur Shah Zafar Marg -JLN Marg -Asaf Ali RoadRESTRICTIONS - No heavy/commercial vehicles on BSZ Marg & JLN Marg (as specified stretches) Avoid above roads; plan alternate routes & travel in advance Use Park & Ride facilities from designated locationsStay updated through Delhi Police Traffic channels.”

The match will take place at the Arun Jaitley Stadium, one of the capital’s busiest sporting venues, and authorities are anticipating a significant surge in vehicular and pedestrian movement in the surrounding areas.

Peak traffic hours identified

According to the advisory, the build-up of congestion will be gradual in the afternoon and evening. The period between 1:00 PM and 9:00 PM will experience the heaviest traffic. This period includes the arrival of spectators, the timing of matches, and the dispersal of spectators after a match, all of which cause a build-up of traffic.

It has been indicated that even after 9:00 PM, movement of traffic may still be slow, especially right after the end of the match when all spectators exit the stadium.

Key roads expected to be affected

Commuters have been strongly advised to avoid the following stretches during match hours:

  • JLN Marg (Rajghat to Delhi Gate, both carriageways)
  • Asaf Ali Road (Turkman Gate to Delhi Gate)
  • Bahadur Shah Zafar Marg (Delhi Gate to ITO, both carriageways)

These areas are expected to witness significant congestion due to match-day traffic and security arrangements.

Restrictions on heavy vehicles

To ease congestion, the movement of heavy and commercial vehicles will be restricted on several stretches:

  • Daryaganj to Delhi Gate Chowk (Bahadur Shah Zafar Marg)
  • ITO to Delhi Gate Chowk (Bahadur Shah Zafar Marg)
  • Delhi Gate Chowk to Guru Nanak Chowk (JLN Marg)

These restrictions are aimed at ensuring smoother traffic flow in high-density zones around the stadium.

Stadium entry gates and access routes

Spectators attending the match have been assigned specific entry routes based on gate numbers:

  • Gate 1–8 (South Side): Entry via Bahadur Shah Zafar Marg
  • Gate 10–15 (East Side): Entry via JLN Marg (near Ambedkar Stadium Bus Terminal)
  • Gate 16–18 (West Side): Entry via Bahadur Shah Zafar Marg (near petrol pump)

Authorities have urged visitors to follow designated routes to avoid confusion and delays.

Parking arrangements and Park-and-Ride facility

Free parking will be available at the following locations:

  • Mata Sundari Road
  • Rajghat Power House Road
  • Velodrome Road

These locations will be connected to the stadium via a park-and-ride facility, with shuttle bus services starting two hours before the match and continuing until one hour after it ends.Parking near the stadium is strictly restricted, except for vehicles with valid labels displaying vehicle and driver details.

  • Plan the route in advance and take extra time for the journey
  • Avoid the areas which are congested; instead, take alternate routes
  • Park the vehicles at a place which is designated for Park & Ride to avoid congestion on the venue
  • Try to use public transport to reduce congestion on the road

It is expected that more traffic personnel would be deployed at the venue and nearby areas to handle the rush of traffic.
