Iran expects nations like India to denounce Israeli “military aggression" against it, as such actions violate international law, a senior Iranian diplomat said on Friday. Mohammad Javad Hosseini, the deputy chief of mission at the Iranian embassy, also expressed hope that Pakistan would avoid actions detrimental to Iran’s interests.

Hosseini’s comments on Pakistan came in response to a question during a media briefing about Pakistan Army Chief Field Marshal Asim Munir’s meeting with US President Donald Trump at the White House on Wednesday. There is speculation that Washington may consider using Pakistani military bases if it decides to launch attacks on Tehran.

Hosseini emphasised that India, as a leader of the Global South, is expected to condemn Israel’s violation of international law by attacking a sovereign nation. “We believe every country, including India, should condemn these Israeli military actions, not because of their relations with Iran, but because these actions breach global norms," he stated.

The ongoing hostilities between Israel and Iran have seen both countries launch hundreds of missiles and drones at each other’s cities and military facilities over the past week.

When asked if Iran was considering closing the Strait of Hormuz, Hosseini did not provide a direct answer but indicated that several options were being considered.

Nearly 30 per cent of the world’s daily oil consumption passes through the Strait of Hormuz, and even a brief disruption could significantly impact oil markets, according to the International Energy Agency. “We have many options on the table, but it doesn’t mean we will act on them immediately. It depends on the situation and the actions of other players," Hosseini explained. “If a resolution is sought, some of these options may be set aside," he added.

Regarding the potential impact of hostilities with Israel on Iran’s Chabahar port, Hosseini noted that any escalation could have widespread implications for the flow of energy and other commodities.

“It is not just about Chabahar; it concerns the entire region. Further escalation will undoubtedly affect the flow of oil, shipments, and commodities passing through these channels," he said.

“Countries that would be affected should think carefully and work to stop this aggression to avoid negative economic impacts on the region and the world," he concluded.
