The situation surrounding United States (US) President Donald Trump’s final deadline for Iran is at a critical flashpoint. The President has set a cutoff of 8:00 PM Washington DC time for Iran to accept a 15-point peace proposal or face severe military consequences.

There are three ways in which the deadline could play out, News18 explains.

WHAT IS TRUMP’s DEADLINE? WHAT TRUMP SAID ON TUESDAY

US President Donald Trump once again exhorted Iran to make a deal by his Tuesday deadline, saying a “whole civilization will die tonight" if an agreement is not reached to end the conflict. “A whole civilization will die tonight, never to be brought back again. I don’t want that to happen, but it probably will," Trump said in a post on Truth Social.

“We will find out tonight, one of the most important moments in the long and complex history of the World."

Trump warned that the United States could “take out" Iran in a single night, labeling the potential operation “Power Plant Day and Bridge Day". He explicitly stated that every bridge in Iran would be decimated and every power plant would be “out of business, burning, and exploding" within a four-hour window if his demands are not met.

The final deadline for an “acceptable deal" is Tuesday, April 7, 2026, at 8:00 P.M. Eastern Time (which corresponds to 00:00 GMT Wednesday or 5:30 A.M. IST Wednesday).

The immediate reopening of the Strait of Hormuz to ensure the free flow of global energy. While Trump has noted that some Iranian leaders appear to be negotiating in “good faith," Iran has so far rejected U.S. ceasefire proposals, demanding a permanent end to hostilities and the lifting of sanctions.

Israel has already warned Iranian civilians to avoid using trains or going near railway lines in anticipation of potential strikes as the deadline expires.

SCENARIO 1: MASSIVE INFRASTRUCTURE STRIKES

Trump has explicitly warned that if the deadline passes without a deal, the following day will be designated as “Power Plant Day and Bridge Day".

U.S. forces would likely launch strikes against Iran’s core national infrastructure, including power stations, bridges, oil wells, and the vital export facilities on Kharg Island.

Trump has stated this could take out the country’s power and infrastructure in “one night," effectively sending the nation back to the “Stone Age".

SCENARIO 2: A LAST-MINUTE DIPLOMATIC BREAKTHROUGH

Despite the heightened rhetoric, Trump has expressed intermittent optimism that Iran might negotiate in good faith.

Any deal would likely require Iran to reopen the Strait of Hormuz and adhere to the 15-point peace plan presented by Washington.

Iranian officials have publicly denied that any active negotiations are taking place, creating a stark disconnect between the two sides.

SCENARIO 3: ESCALATION INTO TOTAL HYBRID WARFARE

The situation could broaden beyond single-night strikes into a more sustained regional conflict.

With major Iranian leadership previously targeted in US and Israeli strikes, a missed deadline could trigger broader retaliatory cycles involving Iran’s regional allies.

Failure to meet the deadline would likely be met with even more crippling sanctions and the potential seizure of Iran’s oil reserves, as floated by Trump.

KEY FAQs

What are the possible outcomes tonight?

There are three main scenarios — no action / delay, last-minute deal or talks, military strikes.

Is a deal still possible at the last minute?

Yes, but uncertain. Backchannel talks are ongoing, and Trump has previously extended deadlines — but he now says this one is “final", making a breakthrough harder.

What happens if the deadline is missed?

If no agreement is reached, the U.S. has warned of large-scale strikes on key infrastructure like power grids and bridges, which could sharply escalate the conflict and impact global oil markets
