US President Donald Trump said the newly signed agreement between the United States and Iran amounts to an “unconditional surrender" by Tehran. He further asserted that his power has “no limits", according to an interview with Axios.
Speaking to Axios on Thursday evening, Trump described the accord as the culmination of months of conflict between Washington and Tehran that had disrupted global trade routes, including the closure of the strategically important Strait of Hormuz and heightened concerns about the global economy.
Trump said his administration pursued the agreement to prevent the confrontation from escalating into a broader economic crisis. “I negotiated the agreement to stop this from becoming a global economic depression," he told Axios.
The memorandum of understanding signed Thursday establishes a 60-day period during which U.S. and Iranian negotiators will attempt to finalize a comprehensive agreement. The framework reportedly provides for the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, a key passageway for global oil shipments, and outlines a process for future negotiations over Iran’s nuclear program.
While the agreement marks a significant diplomatic breakthrough after three and a half months of hostilities, several major issues remain unresolved. Those outstanding matters are expected to be addressed during the next phase of negotiations.
In the Axios interview, Trump characterized the deal as a decisive victory for Washington. He argued that the terms represented an “unconditional surrender" by Iran, though details of the final arrangements and any concessions by either side have yet to be fully disclosed.
Trump also made striking comments about presidential power when asked what the conflict had taught him about the limits of executive authority. According to Axios, he responded that he had not learned such a lesson, adding: “I know there are, but there are no limits."
