The entirety of Argentina held its breath on Saturday night.

With just over two weeks remaining before the start of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, Lionel Messi sent shockwaves through the football world after limping off during Inter Miami CF’s chaotic 6-4 victory over the Philadelphia Union.

The Argentine superstar exited in the 73rd minute after signaling toward the bench, immediately raising fears of a possible muscle injury.

Messi, playing his final match before the World Cup break, was substituted for Mateo Silvetti before heading straight down the tunnel at Nu Stadium.

The eight-time Ballon d’Or winner remains the emotional and tactical centerpiece of Argentina, and any fitness concern this close to the World Cup inevitably sparks panic.

Argentina open their campaign on June 16 against Algeria, with Messi still expected to captain Lionel Scaloni’s side alongside Inter Miami teammate Rodrigo De Paul.

What Happened To Messi?

As of now, there is no official medical diagnosis or timeline regarding Messi’s condition.

However, the sight of the 38-year-old asking to come off on his own immediately fueled speculation over whether his World Cup participation could be under threat.

Thankfully for Argentina, Messi did not appear to require assistance while leaving the pitch or walking through the tunnel.

Inter Miami coach Guillermo Hoyos attempted to calm fears after the match.

“As far as I know, we don’t have a report on that yet, but he really was fatigued. It was fatigue," Hoyos said.

“Yes, it was fatigue. He was tired, the field was heavy, and rather than doubt, you always say not to take the risk."

Hoyos also admitted he had not yet spoken to Messi after the match.

World Cup Countdown Begins

While Messi has still not formally confirmed whether he will feature in what would be a record sixth World Cup appearance, he is widely expected to lead Argentina once again this summer.

For now, fans of the Albiceleste can only wait for further medical updates.
